Tigers, Martinez make it official
Victor Martinez and the Detroit Tigers have completed their four-year deal, the team announced Friday.
General manager Dave Dombrowski says he expects Martinez to be used as a designated hitter while also catching two to three times a week.
Martinez hit .302 with 20 home runs and 79 RBI in 127 games with Boston last season.
The Tigers had been looking for another big bat to add to a lineup that also includes slugging first baseman Miguel Cabrera.
Detroit had reached a preliminary agreement with Martinez on a $50 million, four-year contract, which was subject to a physical.
