The Miami Marlins are retiring Jose Fernandez's number

The Miami Marlins were never going to forget Jose Fernandez, but the organization is taking a step to ensure his presence remains around the club forever.

On Monday, a day after the 24-year-old Fernandez was killed in a boating accident, Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria announced the club is retiring Fernandez's No. 16.

It's yet another gesture to show just how much Fernandez was beloved by everyone with the Marlins.

After every player wears No. 16 on Monday against the Mets, no Marlin will ever wear it again.

Aside from Jackie Robinson's No. 42, which is universally retired across MLB, Fernandez's No. 16 is the only number retired in the Miami organization.
