That glaring White Sox cap mishap in 'Straight Outta Compton'

“Straight Outta Compton” may have dominated the box office over the past weekend, making over $60 million in a No. 1 weekend debut, but a rather inconsequential but amusing wardrobe error in a scene at the beginning of the film has sports fans — make that persnickety sports fans — calling foul.

In the opening scene, Eazy-E, portrayed by Jason Mitchell, is wearing a black Chicago White Sox cap. Astute observers have pointed out that the timing of the scene, set in 1986, is inconsistent with the style of White Sox hat Eazy-E is sporting.

The ChiSox hat the actor is wearing, featuring the word “SOX” in old English lettering, did not make its first appearance until 1991, when the White Sox began wearing the black-and-white uniforms the team still currently wears.

Oops. A Los Angeles Raiders cap would have been much more apropos, on several fronts. Obviously.

Movies frequently have these kind of minor gaffes related to matters involving historical accuracy, among other things. But filmmakers clearly should be especially careful in situations similar to the one that played out while filming “Straight Outta Compton.” Sports fans, after all, tend to be quite the observant bunch concerning such minute details and are more than happy to point out these kind of mistakes to anyone who will listen.
