Springer named Astros' Roberto Clemente Award nominee
Energetic outfielder George Springer makes a difference on and off the field for the Houston Astros, and he was recognized for those achievements on Monday.
Springer was named the club's nominee for the Roberto Clemente Award, a league-wide honor designed to call attention to the community service turned in by various MLB players. Every team receives one nominee, with the overall winner to be announced during the World Series.
Springer, who has battled stuttering issues since his childhood, has been a spokesperson for the Stuttering Association for the Young since last season.
The Astros' official press release announcing Springer's nomination notes that he will be recognized on the field at Minute Maid Park on Friday, September 18 before the Astros take on the Oakland Athletics.
Roberto Clemente Day is scheduled for September 16, but since the Astros will be on the road that day the ceremony was moved back to their next home game.
