Sources: Minaya, Manuel to lose Mets gigs
The futures of New York Mets manager Jerry Manuel and general manager Omar Minaya may finally be clear.
Neither Manuel nor Minaya will return to those roles for the Mets in 2011 according to major-league sources.
The team, however, has not spoken yet with Minaya and Manuel about their fates. Those conversations will take place Sunday or Monday.
The Mets then will conduct a wide-ranging search for a new GM. The new GM and front office then will have a large say in determining the next manager.
GM candidates include former Rangers and Indians GM John Hart, former A's GM and Padres president Sandy Alderson, former Diamondbacks GM Josh Byrnes and White Sox assistant GM Rick Hahn. Rangers GM Jon Daniels has an out in his contract and also could draw consideration.
Minaya is under contract. The next GM will determine whether he wants to keep him.
The imprending shakeup was reported Friday on SI.com, which said an announcement is likely to come before the playoffs begin next week.
The Mets entered the year with a big payroll and high hopes, but injuries derailed the team early and often. Carlos Beltran, Jason Bay and Jose Reyes are among the big names who've missed extended time this season.
The Mets are currently 77-82, eliminated from playoff contention and 18 games out of first place in the NL East.
