Sources: McLaren leaving coaching staff

The Nationals remain in flux.

Acting manager John McLaren will resign from his position as bench coach when the team names Davey Johnson manager, according to major-league sources.

The Nationals plan for Johnson to take over as manager on Monday, but are still working out the final details of his deal.

Johnson will manage at least through the end of the season, general manager Mike Rizzo said Saturday on the MLB on FOX broadcast of the Nationals-White Sox game.

McLaren will remain in the organization, according to MLB.com, but not as part of Johnson's staff.

"Davey's part of the furniture, put it that way," Rizzo said on FOX. "He is signed to a long-term consulting contract. We're figuring out dotting the I's and crossing the T’s on that. But he's going to manage the team through '11.

"We're going to reevaluate after the season. Davey will be part of the reevaluation process . . . But Davey is going to be in the organization a long, long time. As long as Mike Rizzo is running the organization, Davey Johnson will be part of the organization."

McLaren had served as bench coach under Jim Riggleman, who resigned as manager on Thursday. The Nationals likely will replace McLaren by promoting Trent Jewett to bench coach. Jewett, currently the Nationals' extra coach, had not been regularly in uniform at game time.

While McLaren served under Johnson with Team USA during the 2009 World Baseball Classic, he is closer to one of Johnson's former rivals, Lou Piniella.

McLaren's resignation would stem from his loyalty to Riggleman and his overall frustration with the Nationals' situation, sources said.
