Source: Right-hander Kennedy will reject Padres' qualifying offer

Free-agent right-hander Ian Kennedy will reject the San Diego Padres' qualifying offer for the 2016 season, FOX Sports Insider Ken Rosenthal first reported Friday.

Kennedy, 30, went 9-15 with a 4.28 ERA in 30 starts this past season. He struck out 174 batters in 168 1/3 innings.

Had he accepted the offer, Kennedy would have remained with the Padres with a $15.8 million salary for 2016.

Earlier, Rosenthal detailed why Kennedy might accept the offer --€“ possibly in hopes of signing a long-term deal and then being traded by the Padres.

The Astros' Colby Rasmus became the first player ever to accept a qualifying offer Friday, and the Orioles' Matt Wieters also has accepted his.
