Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains

“Anyway, a good friend of mine used to say, 'This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball. You hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains.' Think about that for a while.”

Ebby Calvin "Nuke" LaLoosh, played by Tim Robbins, tells this to a reporter in the classic baseball movie “Bull Durham.” These were words of wisdom taught to Nuke by Crash Davis, played by Kevin Costner.

Well, in Fort Wayne, Ind., on Wednesday night, it sort of rained.

In the top of the fifth inning of a Class-A Midwest League game between the Great Lake Loons (Dodgers affiliate) and the Fort Wayne TinCaps (Padres), a bizarre scene happened.

TinCaps first baseman Fernando Perez was chasing a foul ball down the right-field line when he kicked a sprinkler head, setting off a geyser, causing an 18-minute “rain” delay. (If you’re wondering, the Loons won 15-4).

As Crash said during the sprinkler-rain delay he manufactured in the movie, “Oh my goodness. We got ourselves a natural disaster.”
