Small group protests Indians' use of Chief Wahoo logo

CLEVELAND (AP) A small group of protesters withstood freezing temperatures to protest the Cleveland Indians' use of the Chief Wahoo logo before Monday's opener against Boston was postponed by cold weather.

Holding hand-painted signs that read ''People Not Mascots'' and ''Little Red Sambo Must Go,'' the protesters stood outside the gates of the ballpark and demanded the team abolish the smiling, red-faced logo they feel is racist and offensive to Native Americans.

The protest has become an opening day tradition and the fight over Chief Wahoo has lingered for years. The team dropped Wahoo as its primary logo two years ago, switching to a block ''C'' logo. However, one of the caps the Indians wear at home has the ''Wahoo'' logo on the front and Cleveland's jerseys remain adorned with the logo on one sleeve.

Several of the protesters said they oppose the logo because of its depiction and the Indians profiting from its use.
