Scott Boras mum on possible Xander Bogaerts contract extension

by Jared Chandler

Xander Bogaerts is very happy to be a member of the Boston Red Sox. Is it already time to start considering a contract extension for the up-and-coming shortstop?

Bogaerts’ agent, Scott Boras, held his annual press conference at the MLB General Managers Meetings on Wednesday to discuss matters related to some of his clients. When asked about Bogaerts’ contract situation with the Red Sox, Boras wasn’t interested in giving much detail, other than to say the 23-year-old is pleased with how things have worked out with the organization thus far.

“Xander is very happy in Boston,” Boras said, per WEEI.com. “He had a great year there. It’s really a relationship between him and the coaching staff. They did a great job with him and he did a great job with him and he did a great job for them, so we’re very encouraged about his future there.”

Boras’ comments Wednesday obviously were vague. He spoke a bit more openly to WEEI.com about Bogaerts’ contract situation back in September.

“Look, I always tell every team and every player, we’re an open door,” Boras said late in the season. “Anything they want to look at and offer, and then the player just has to make his judgments, so we evaluate that.”

The 2016 campaign will be Bogaerts’ third full season as a member of the Red Sox. He isn’t set to hit free agency until after the 2019 season, at which point he could be a superstar.
