Royals getting in on the winter fun

The Kansas City Royals are nearing an agreement on a one-year major league contract with outfielder Melky Cabrera, a source told FOXSports.com early Thursday.

Cabrera was a regular outfielder for the world champion Yankees in 2009, but is coming off a down year with the Atlanta Braves.

He batted .255 with four home runs and 42 RBI in 147 games last season and went 0-for-8 in the first-round playoff loss to San Francisco.

The Royals’ outfield doesn’t have many established everyday players, so Cabrera, 26, should have the chance to win a starting job in spring training.
