Rockies release 49-year-old Moyer

Jamie Moyer, the oldest pitcher to ever win a major league game, is back on the free agent market.

The 49-year-old left-hander was designated for assignment by the Rockies last week and can now sign with another team after clearing waivers.

Moyer, who told the Denver Post last week that he hoped to continue pitching somewhere else, made 10 starts this season with Colorado after making the team in spring training.

After sitting out the 2011 season following Tommy John surgery, Moyer posted a 5.70 ERA in 53.2 innings and became the oldest man to ever record a win April 17 against San Diego.

If no team pursues Moyer, he would end his quarter-century in the majors with 269 wins, which ranks 35th on the all-time list.

He is the third-oldest pitcher in major league history and will turn 50 in November.
