Rockies' Chad Bettis finds success from focus on fastball

Since being called up from Triple A, right-handed pitcher Chad Bettis has been a revelation. He’s gone 2-0 with a 2.70 ERA and nearly threw a perfect game in Philadelphia on May 29.

According to the Denver Post, Bettis’ success can be traced back to four consecutive bullpen sessions during spring training in which threw nothing but fastballs. Pitching coach Steve Foster explained the reason for this focus:

"It's all about being able to repeat a delivery and hit a spot," Foster said. "Chad wasn't doing that. And if you can't do that, you're not going to be able to succeed at this elite level.”

The Post notes that Bettis’ 96 mph fastball had been hanging over the plate too much. Rockies manager calls those sessions “game-changing.”
