Report: Pirates interested in reuniting with Padres shortstop Clint Barmes
As the trade deadline nears, San Diego Padres shortstop Clint Barmes is reportedly drawing interest from his former club.
The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports that the Pittsburgh Pirates have recently inquired about Barmes as they seek to add depth to the left side of their infield, which has been depleted by injuries.
Barmes is no stranger to the Steel City, as he played with the Pirates last season, his final of three seasons with the team.
While he has been splitting time with Alexi Amarista at shortstop, Barmes has shown improvement at the plate in the 58 games in which he's played this season.
After hitting a paltry .224/.271/.314 with 13 home runs and 75 RBI in 300 games with the Pirates, the 36-year-old infielder has hit .284/.324/.440 with three home runs and 10 RBI in 144 plate appearances in 58 games this season.
The Pirates have also inquired about Arizona Diamondbacks infielder Cliff Pennington and Oakland A's utility man Ben Zobrist to fill their infield needs.
