Report: Mariners, Cubs swap Yoervis Medina for Welington Castillo
The Seattle Mariners have picked up catcher Welington Castillo from the Chicago Cubs in exchange for reliever Yoervis Media, it was reported by several sources on Twitter on Tuesday morning. Jeff Passan of Yahoo! Sports was first to report the trade.
This is an intriguing deal for Seattle, as it's unclear how it will affect the team's 25-man roster. Incumbent right-handed catcher Mike Zunino has shown a few signs lately of breaking out of his offensive rut, but he's also reverted back to the high-strikeout hitter he's been thus far in his Mariners career. Lookout Landing put together a good rundown of Zunino's issues and how, if at all, Castillo's acquisition might affect him.
As for Medina, the Cubs receive a reliever that threw 57 innings for Seattle in 2014, amassing a 2.68 ERA and tallying 60 strikeouts on the year. In 12 outings with the M's in 2015, Medina had allowed five runs (four earned) in 12 innings and posted an FIP of 4.49.
