Report: Jeter will not attend Yankees' home opener
Not only won't Derek Jeter be in the New York Yankees' Opening Day lineup this spring, he won't even attend the team's home opener.
The Yankees' recently retired captain told SiriusXM Radio on Sunday that "I think actually I'll be out of the country" when the Yankees host the Toronto Blue Jays on April 6.
The 40-year-old Jeter wrapped up his 20-season major-league career this past fall and hinted that he would take a break from the sport. He apparently hasn't changed his stance.
"I need to get away," Jeter told SiriusXM. "I've been playing this game professionally for parts of 23 seasons, so I need to get away from it."
With Jeter gone, the Yankees are expected to start Didi Gregorius, whom they acquired during the offseason, at shortstop.
