Report: Cubs to call up Schwarber, place Montero (thumb) on DL

The Chicago Cubs will recall prized catching prospect Kyle Schwarber from Triple-A because of a thumb injury to catcher Miguel Montero, the Chicago Tribune reported Thursday.

Montero will be placed on the 15-day disabled list and will see a hand specialist.

Schwarber, named the MVP of Sunday's Futures Game, hit .364/.391/.591 with a homer and six RBI in six games during a major-league call-up last month. The 22-year-old spent five of those games as the team's DH during an interleague stretch.

In the minors this season, Schwarber hit .333 with three homers and 10 RBI in 60 at-bats (17 games) for Triple-A Iowa; in 58 games at Double-A Tennessee, he hit .320 with 13 homers and 39 RBI in 58 games.

Catchers David Ross and Taylor Teagarden also are on the Cubs' roster.
