Red Sox SS Marco Scutaro activated from DL

The Boston Red Sox have activated shortstop Marco Scutaro from the 15-day disabled list and inserted him into the lineup for Monday night's game against the New York Yankees, giving aching infielder Jed Lowrie some rest.

Scutaro has been out since May 8 because of a strained left oblique. Manager Terry Francona said his playing time will depend on how others are feeling, including Lowrie.

Lowrie hurt his shoulder in a collision chasing a popup on May 29 in Detroit. He says the shoulder hasn't gotten better - or worse - and he hopes to have an MRI as soon as possible for his ''peace of mind.''

Scutaro is hitting .235 with one home run and eight RBIs in 20 games.

To make room, the Red Sox sent RHP Scott Atchison to Triple-A Pawtucket.
