Red Sox lefty David Price will not need surgery after injury scare

Boston can breathe a sigh of relief: It appears David Price is going to be OK.

The Red Sox lefty, who suffered discomfort in his left forearm after throwing 38 pitches in a start on Tuesday, will not need surgery as initially feared.

Boston manager John Farrell announced on Friday that Price instead will return to Fort Meyers, Florida, to start a medication program.

 

Price will then be re-evaluated after 7 to 10 days.

Price himself seemed to make light of the situation, letting Red Sox nation know that he's headed back to Ft. Myers, the team's spring training home.

This is a best-case scenario for Boston, as Price is a key cog for a Boston club that is hoping to make it to the World Series this season. The 31-year-old went 17-9 with a 3.99 ERA in his debut season with the Red Sox. Boston's odds to win the World Series are currently 9-2 in Vegas, tied with the defending champion Cubs for the best mark.

Price is in the second season of his seven-year, $217 million deal with the Red Sox.
