Red Sox hire Chili Davis as hitting coach
BOSTON (AP) The Boston Red Sox have hired Chili Davis as their hitting coach.
Davis held that job with the Oakland Athletics the past three seasons and with Boston's top minor-league team at Triple-A Pawtucket in 2011. In a 19-year playing career as an outfielder and designated hitter, Davis was a three-time All-Star.
The Red Sox also announced Thursday that Victor Rodriguez would return for a third season as assistant hitting coach.
The 54-year-old Davis succeeds 45-year-old Greg Colbrunn, who held the job two seasons. The Red Sox said this month he chose not to return. Colbrunn suffered a brain hemorrhage June 4 and returned on a part-time basis late that month. He said after the season he was considering a break from baseball to spend more time with his family.
