Rangers' Colby Lewis takes no-hitter into ninth, settles for 5-1 win over A's

Colby Lewis retired the first 23 batters he faced against the A's on Thursday, before surrendering a two-out walk in the eighth inning to Yonder Alonso. The chance at a perfect game was gone, but the no-hitter was still in play heading into the bottom of the ninth.

Max Muncy doubled to deep right to end Lewis' chance at immortality, but Lewis still finished with a complete game and a 5-1 win to improve his record to 6-0 this season.

Prior to this, the closest Lewis had come to a perfect game also came against the A's. In September of 2015, he again got to the eighth inning before Danny Valencia ended the suspense with a leadoff double. Lewis ended with a two-hit shutout in that one for a 4-0 Rangers win.

The last Rangers pitcher to take a no-hitter into the ninth inning was Yu Darvish in 2013.
