Ramirez hurts right hamstring on bases against SF
The Dodgers aren't ready to speculate about whether Manny Ramirez might be headed for the disabled list after he injured his right hamstring running the bases during Tuesday night's 4-2 win over the San Francisco Giants.
Ramirez was removed in the top of the first inning and later told athletic trainer Stan Conte and manager Joe Torre he had felt some tightness in the hamstring before the game. Ramirez was listed as day to day and Conte expected to know a lot more once the slugger arrived at the ballpark Wednesday morning.
No tests were scheduled, but they could take place when the club gets to Arizona for its off day Thursday, if needed. The Dodgers will wait to do an MRI exam unless Ramirez is significantly worse Wednesday, Conte said.
``I'm not thinking about the DL right now, I'm thinking about how he comes in tomorrow,'' Conte said. ``I'll know a whole lot more tomorrow in terms of how he recovers.''
Ramirez rounded second on James Loney's two-out RBI single and held up slightly before running back to the bag as the Giants threw behind him. He extended his right foot and made contact with shortstop Edgar Renteria's glove. The ball came out and Ramirez was safe.
Ramirez was clearly hurt because he immediately made his way toward the dugout and was met by Conte and Torre.
``As he was rounding second and stopped was where he felt it,'' Conte said. ``Obviously, he knew it right away.''
Matt Kemp, out of the starting lineup for a third straight day because of his recent struggles, replaced Ramirez on the bases and then took over in center field, with Reed Johnson sliding over to Ramirez's spot in left. Kemp finished with two hits.
Ramirez singled to get aboard after getting three hits with an RBI double in Monday's 4-2 win.
Torre was staying positive about Ramirez, who is batting .322 with eight home runs and 39 RBIs.
``It was sort of low on his leg and hamstring area,'' Torre said. ``He didn't feel it pop. It was tight on him. Hopefully it will be OK. We'll see.''
