Phils to pay Pedro $896K in incentive-laden deal

The Phillies will pay Pedro Martinez a minimum of $896,000 this season, according to terms of his one-year contract obtained by FOXSports.com.

The deal technically has a base salary of $2 million, but the dollars are prorated based on the amount of time left in the season.

Martinez is expected to be a starter, but the contract's incentive package also includes bonuses for relief appearances. He would receive a $50,000 bonus at his 10th, 15th, 20th and 25th relief outings. One Phillies source said Thursday that the bullpen clauses were included to leave the team's options open in how to utilize Martinez.

The team announced Martinez's deal Wednesday and officially placed him on the disabled list Thursday with a right shoulder strain. He won't be eligible to pitch in the majors until July 31 at the earliest.
