Nationals' Werth, Zimmerman nearing return to lineup
The Nationals could be adding reinforcements to their depleted lineup this week - and not via the trade deadline.
Outfielders Jayson Werth and Ryan Zimmerman, both on rehab assignments, are poised to come off the disabled list this week, possibly in time for the start of Tuesday's three-game series against the Marlins.
“We have an off-day (Monday). So they can get another game if need be," Nationals manager Matt Williams told the Washington Post. "And we’ll make a decision after that.”
Werth (fractured wrist) has been sidelined since May 15 while Zimmerman (plantar fasciitis) has been out since June 9. Second baseman Anthony Rendon returned to the lineup Saturday after spending a month on the DL.
Washington, which also is without center fielder Denard Span (back), is 4-6 since the All-Star break and leads the Mets by two games atop the NL East.
