MLB to run league for unsigned players

Major League Baseball says it's creating a new league for amateur players in the Dominican Republic.

The league is designed to showcase the top players who will become eligible to sign with a major league club after July 2, and players who are already eligible to sign professional contracts.

The games will be held on Thursdays at major league academies in the Dominican Republic.

Major League Baseball says the league will include ''an educational component'' for the players, and the coaching staff will run clinics for younger players throughout the country.

The new league was announced on Thursday.
