Mets rookie left-hander Matz to make rehab start Saturday at Class A
New York Mets rookie left-hander Steven Matz will make a rehab start Saturday at Class A St. Lucie.
The 24-year-old Matz is expected to throw 25 pitches in his first action since suffering a partially torn lat muscle in a start against the Los Angeles Dodgers on July 5.
Matz has won both of his career starts in dazzling fashion. He held the Cincinnati Reds to two runs on five hits over 7 2/3 innings in his major league debut on June 28 before blanking the Dodgers over six innings seven days later.
The Mets want Matz to eventually work his way up to 90 pitches before rejoining the team. Once he returns, New York is expected to go to a six-man rotation to curb the innings on its young starters.
Collins says @Smatz88 will throw 25 pitches in a rehab game tomorrow. They hope to get him to 90 pitches before returning. #Mets
