Mets quietly move Wilmer Flores from shortstop to second base
With all the attention on a spectacular debut from starter Steven Matz on Sunday, the New York Mets managed to slip a position change under the radar.
For the first time this season, manager Terry Collins penciled in shortstop Wilmer Flores at second base, where he plans to keep him at least until third baseman David Wright returns from the disabled list.
Flores struggled defensively at shortstop, particularly early in the season, and has 10 errors in 69 games at the position this season.
He's tied for the seventh-most errors amongst all MLB shortstops as of Monday.
"This kid played fine at shortstop," Collins said of Flores, per NJ.com. "Made a couple of errors that cost us a couple of runs at times. But I looked through the league and he caught the baseball. He can play second base. He showed us that last September. And look in September, we played pretty good with Wilmer Flores playing second, with Dan at third and Ruben [Tejada] at shortstop. With Dan coming back, we certainly don't know what the time frame is with David and I think this is going to be our best infield that we're going to run out there on a nightly basis."
