Mets might try to keep All-Star Reyes

Heads up, all you general managers who are coveting New York Mets shortstop Jose Reyes.

He might not be available, after all — neither at this season’s trade deadline nor in free agency.

Mets general manager Sandy Alderson is considering making a sizable offer at the conclusion of this season to keep the All-Star shortstop, two sources have told The New York Post.

At the very least, the sources told the newspaper in a story published Monday, it is almost inconceivable the team will trade the free-agent-to-be before the July 31 trade deadline.

Reyes recently suffered a mild strain to his left hamstring. Though he traveled with the Mets on their trip to Los Angeles and San Francisco, he will not start Monday against the Dodgers and, perhaps, might sit out until after the All-Star Game.

The ninth-year player was chosen to start for the National League All-Star team on July 12 (8 p.m. ET, FOX), his third appearance to the Midsummer Classic.

He is batting a career- and MLB-best .354 and has a personal-best .398 on-base percentage.

Beyond the statistics, Alderson and team owner Fred Wilpon might be contemplating Reyes’ intangible worth to the Mets’ fan base, according to The Post.

Alderson would not tell the newspaper about his commitment to keeping Reyes but did say, “There is more going on here (in the Reyes situation) than the game on the field.”
