Mets infielder Wilmer Flores had wrist surgery
The Mets were without Flores for the last three weeks of the season
Mets infielder Wilmer Flores had surgery on his wrist Friday, posting after that it went well.
The surgery involved the removal of the hook of the hamate bone in his right wrist.
Flores is expected to be ready for Spring Training.
He was injured against the Braves in Atlanta on Sept. 10 when he slid head-first into home plate.
While sliding head-first was a bit foolish, Flores was only still in the game because manager Terry Collins “forgot” to pinch-run for him. That’s inexcusable, but we digress.
Flores tried to make it back several times near the end of the season, but was unable to swing a bat.
His absence was felt in the Wild Card game against the Giants and left-hander Madison Bumgarner. Flores hit a ridiculous .340/.383/.710 with 11 HR in 100 at-bats against lefties this season.
Yup, it certainly would’ve been nice to have Flores in there at first base Wednesday night instead of James Loney. Sigh.
The Mets are expected to tender Lucas Duda a contract, they have Jose Reyes at the league minimum, and Asdrubal Cabrera under contract. So if David Wright is healthy — and he expects to be — Flores will likely again be called upon to serve as a backup at all four infield positions.
And that’s without taking into consideration the future of Neil Walker, who the Mets will likely extend a qualifying offer to.
In any event, Flores is an extremely valuable asset because of the way he mashes left-handers. So having him at 100 percent next year will be a key as the Mets try to finish their still-unfinished business.
