Mets doctor: Hefner needs Tommy John surgery

A New York Mets doctor is recommending that right-hander Jeremy Hefner have Tommy John surgery.

Hefner was put on the disabled list last week. He said he's been dealing with a sore elbow all season.

Mets manager Terry Collins said Tuesday that team medical director Dr. David Altchek recommended the surgery. Collins said Hefner may seek another opinion.

The 27-year-old Hefner is 4-8 with a 4.34 ERA. He was 0-2 with a 7.58 ERA in his past six starts.

Collins also said right-hander Jenrry Mejia will likely have surgery in the next seven to 10 days to remove a bone spur in his surgically repaired elbow. Mejia was put on the disabled list after he left Saturday's start at San Diego because of pain.
