Mets' deGrom issues five-ball walk as part of forgettable outing

New York Mets right-hander Jacob deGrom had a forgettable outing against the Philadelphia Phillies on Monday night, but he did manage one noteworthy feat that wound up overshadowed by his teammates' eight-homer barrage.

The reigning National League Rookie of the Year was pounded for a career-worst seven runs in only 2 2/3 innings - the shortest outing in his first two seasons.

Despite the brief stint, deGrom managed to put an asterisk on his start by surrendering a five-ball walk to Phillies second baseman Cesar Hernandez, who appeared to have been retired on a 1-1 groundout.

However, Tom Hallion ruled that the ball bounced off the foot of Hernandez - giving Philadelphia's leadoff hitter a reprieve. Hernandez made the most of his second chance and eventually drew a walk, even though he had to wait through five balls for the free pass.
