Mets' Bartolo Colon: 'I feel good with the weight I have'
New York Mets starter Bartolo Colon is often ridiculed for his rotund figure, but he doesn't seem to care what others think about his physique.
The 42-year-old righty is listed at 5-foot-11, 285 pounds in his profile on MLB.com.
"I feel good with the weight I have," Colon tells the New York Times in a feature on the veteran pitcher.
While Colon is often noted for being overweight, he is also naturally strong. His father, Miguel, reveals that Colon developed his strength at a young age while helping him de-pulp coffee beans.
"From childhood, he was very strong," Miguel says. "He was capable of pulping up to 1,000 crates of coffee beans in a day."
As he developed his strength turning the crank on the coffee bean de-pulper, Colon developed his pitching prowess by throwing rocks at fruit to knock it down from trees.
"Throwing at coconuts and mangoes," the Altamira, Dominican Republic native said. "But the coconut was the most difficult."
