Marquis denies report that he's mad at Rockies

Both Marquis and Rockies general manager Dan O'Dowd strongly denied Thursday a report by Jon Heyman of SI.com that suggested he will reject the Rockies' offer due to a "falling out over his reaction to his not getting a playoff start."

"There was no falling out," O'Dowd said. "He was extremely professional about it. It wasn't an issue at all."

Marquis echoed O'Dowd's remarks.

"I've traded messages with Dan, thanking him for everything," Marquis said. "Everything ended well. I would have zero problems going back there."

Marquis, however, is expected to reject the Rockies' offer of a one-year, non-guaranteed deal for another reason — the possibility that he will receive a multi-year deal.

The Rockies will receive a supplemental pick between the first and second rounds if Marquis — a Type B free agent — signs with another club.

As for his failure to start in the postseason, Marquis said he was scheduled to pitch Game 4 of the Division Series against the Phillies, but understood the team's decision to pitch right-hander Ubaldo Jimenez after Game 3 was postponed due to cold weather.

"I was prepared to pitch Game 4," Marquis said. "But when you have a guy throwing 97 with devastating stuff coming back on normal rest, I can see why they would come back with him."

Right-hander Pedro Martinez, the Phillies' scheduled starter in Game 3, also was bumped by the postponement. Martinez did not pitch in the series. Marquis made one relief appearance.

"Obviously, I would have loved to have (started) in the playoffs, competed on that level," Marquis said. "It just didn't turn out the way I wanted it. But it didn't stop me from competing, trying to get the Rockies to the second round and then the World Series.

"It's part of the business. I've been through it once or twice before. You learn to deal with it better as time goes on."
