Manny Ramirez has three sons all named Manny

By Jason Rowan

Beyond being regarded as one of the most dangerous hitters in the history of the game, Manny Ramirez also has to be one of the most eccentric baseball players to ever don a major league uniform. With that in mind, perhaps it’s hardly surprising that in a recent piece in which he discusses his recollections of being a member of the 1995 Cleveland Indians ball club, it is mentioned in passing that all three of his sons also go by Manny.

Via a story from Northeast Ohio Media Group’s Paul Hoynes:

“My numbers are there,” said Ramirez. “No one is going take those away from me. To be honest with you, I don’t even think about that. My Hall of Fame is my wife, my family, my kids.”

Ramirez has three baseball-playing sons. He named them all Manny. The oldest is a first baseman for the University of San Francisco.

Interesting, relying upon Wikipedia’s entry on the ballplayer, “Ramirez has three sons: Manny Ramirez, Jr. (born 1995) from a previous relationship; Manuelito “Manny” Ramirez (born 2003), and Lucas Ramirez (b. February 2006) with his wife Juliana.” That means his youngest son, Lucas, must also go by Manny, which is somewhat strange in its own right.

Ramirez, currently serving as a hitting consultant with the Chicago Cubs organization, obviously isn’t the first athlete to get self-referential — and excessively lazy — when naming their progeny. After all, legendary boxer and grill pitchman George Foreman has five sons named George.

It’s practically become a cliché over the years to utilize the oft-used phrase “Manny being Manny” when describing the offbeat and oddball antics of Manny Ramirez. Even so, it’s difficult not to rely upon it each and every time a wacky new story about Ramirez’s peculiarly comical eccentricities surfaces, as was the case when a recent anecdote was relayed by Pedro Martinez involving how he spiked a pregame shot with Viagra during the 2004 American League Championship Series.
