Lopes, Wallach added to Dodgers coaching staff

Davey Lopes will coach first base and Tim Wallach will coach third for new Los Angeles Dodgers manager Don Mattingly.

Mattingly also hired former Kansas City manager Trey Hillman as his bench coach on Monday. Los Angeles kept several holdovers from Joe Torre's staff, including pitching coach Rick Honeycutt and new hitting coach Jeff Pentland.

''We've been able to reach back and bring in a number of coaches with Dodger roots, and that's one of the things that was very important to us,'' Mattingly said. ''Not just the quality of the people and the experience they bring with them, but the history of this organization - where it came from and where we want to go.''

First base coach Mariano Duncan, third base coach Larry Bowa and bench coach Bob Schaefer won't return to the Dodgers.

Lopes played 11 seasons for the Dodgers, reaching four All-Star games while playing nine seasons alongside Steve Garvey, Ron Cey and Bill Russell in the longest-tenured infield in major league history. The former Milwaukee manager spent the last four seasons as the Phillies' first base coach, winning a World Series ring in 2008.

Wallach was among the top candidates to replace Torre after managing the Dodgers' Triple-A affiliate in Albuquerque for the past two years, winning the PCL's top manager award in 2009. The former slugging third baseman played four seasons for the Dodgers, and was Los Angeles' hitting coach from 2004-05.

Hillman spent the past three years with the Royals, who fired him May 13 while the club was 11 games below .500.

Mattingly was the Dodgers' hitting coach before Los Angeles selected him to succeed Torre late last season. Pentland, the Dodgers' hitting instructor under Mattingly since July 2008, has been a hitting coach for the Cubs, Royals and Mariners.

Dave Hansen, who played 11 seasons with the Dodgers, was hired to fill Pentland's role as hitting instructor.

Manny Mota also will return for his 32nd year as a coach with the Dodgers.
