Jacob deGrom takes newborn son home from hospital, nearing return to Mets

New York Mets pitcher Jacob deGrom has taken his newborn son home from the hospital, and could re-join the team in time for this weekend's series in Atlanta, manager Terry Collins told reporters on Monday.

DeGrom was placed on the bereavement family medical emergency list over the weekend after his 1-week-old son Jaxon sustained unexpected health complications. The Mets right-hander returned home to Florida to tend to his son and wife. The infant returned home Monday.

With the baby's condition improving, deGrom has been commuting to the Mets' Florida complex to throw bullpen sessions. He threw 71 pitches in a simulated game Tuesday.

If all goes well, deGrom would be lined up to pitch in Sunday's series finale against the Braves.
