Indians catcher Yan Gomes to miss 4-8 weeks with separated AC joint

Yan Gomes' frustrating season just got worse.

The Cleveland Indians catcher was placed on the disabled list Monday following an ugly shoulder injury he suffered during Sunday's 6-1 victory over the Twins.

The team said Gomes has been diagnosed with an A/C joint separation of his right shoulder and will be out approximately four to eight weeks but surgery is not deemed necessary at this point.

Gomes suffered the injury in the fifth inning of Sunday's game while trying to beat out a grounder to first. Attempting to avoid the tag by Kennys Vargas, Gomes took an awkward spill and landed on his right shoulder as he fell to the ground.

The injury occurred one at-bat after Gomes broke an 0-for-27 slump with a double off Twins' starter Kyle Gibson to raise his season average to .165.

On Saturday, his teammates held what they called a team "sacrificial ceremony" for the 28-year-old Brazilian, in which they presented a Boston Market chicken to the baseball gods in an effort to reverse Gomes' fortune.
