How does Ryan Braun fit into the Brewers' outfield plan with Khris Davis gone?
Friday's trade of slugging outfielder Khris Davis to the Oakland Athletics gives the Milwaukee Brewers a decision to make.
Prospect Domingo Santana, acquired last summer in the deal that sent Carlos Gomez and Mike Fiers to the Houston Astros, could have a big role for the rebuilding Brewers in 2016.
Given Santana's presence and apparent readiness for everyday MLB duty, Tom Haudricourt of the Journal Sentinel reported Monday that the Brewers are considering moving Ryan Braun from right to left field to facilitate Santana's arrival.
Milwaukee general manager David Stearns is quoted by Haudricourt as saying of the idea, "That could be a possibility. We're still discussing our various options."
Prior to the 2014 season, the Brewers moved Braun from left to right field to make room for Davis on the roster -- but with Davis now in Oakland there's some flexibility the club didn't have previously.
Not wanting to fully tip his hand, Stearns added, "It's fair to say we're discussing all possibilities with our outfield alignment."
Of course, if the Brewers want to fully commit to a "rebuild" they could pursue a trade of Braun. The 32-year-old is coming off a season in which he hit .285/.356/.498 with 25 home runs, 84 RBI and a 3.8 WAR.
A trade would require some financial maneuvering by the Brewers, as Braun is owed $20 million in 2016 and has $96 million remaining on his contract, which runs through the 2020 season (with a mutual $15 million option for 2021).
