Hamels' status remains up in the air for Rangers

CHICAGO (AP) Cole Hamels' status remained up in the air a day after the Texas Rangers scratched the left-hander from his scheduled start because of neck stiffness.

Manager Jeff Banister was waiting for Hamels to play catch Friday before making an announcement. The Rangers have not said who will start Saturday's game against the White Sox. Hamels could be an option if he's ready, though Banister says that's ''to be determined.''

Hamels had been scheduled to pitch Thursday's series opener. Doug Fister started in his place and tossed seven scoreless innings in the Rangers' 4-2 loss. The 34-year-old Hamels is 2-4 with a 3.48 ERA in nine starts.
