GM Dave Stewart: Diamondbacks 'very much capable' of making playoffs

The Arizona Diamondbacks are currently in third place in the National League West, but that's not stopping them from setting their sights on playing October baseball.

Heading into their game against the Philadelphia Phillies on Tuesday, the D-backs are 6 ½ games back in their division with a 55-56 overall record that positions them 7 ½ games back of the second wildcard spot in the NL.

That's not enough to crush the team's postseason hopes, though.

"A lot of things have to happen for us to get into position to get into the playoffs," general manager Dave Stewart told the Arizona Republic. "Is that capable of happening? Yes, very, very much capable."

As NL Central teams are likely to grab the league's two wildcard spots, Arizona would likely need to win the NL West in order to secure a postseason bid.

Although it seems like a longshot, their division rivals, the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Francisco Giants, have been struggling as of late, while the D-backs have simultaneously been playing some of their best baseball of the season.

"These guys have been resilient all year; they've played hard all year," Stewart said. "I don't see them doing anything different. We've got to count on the teams in front of us to slide and we've got to count on ourselves to be more consistent in how we're playing."
