Giants hurler Jeff Samardzija destroys his bat after striking out

San Francisco flamethrower Jeff Samardzija is used to breaking opposing hitters' bats with his nasty stuff. But on Tuesday the 6-foot-6 righty splintered his own bat over his knee after striking out in the eighth inning and stranding the two runners in scoring position.

Samardzija can't be too made with the overall result as he struck out nine in eight innings in the Giants' 3-1 win; he improved to 4-1. Samardzija, who played football at Notre Dame, is hitting .200 after going 0 for 4 on Tuesday, but maybe his fortunes will change with that bat out of the picture.

"We all were stunned," manager Bruce Bochy said. "You don't see a pitcher do that very often.

"The way it broke off, he looked like Herman Munster."
