Giants first baseman Brandon Belt has knee surgery
Already deemed out for the season due to concussion symptoms, San Francisco Giants first baseman Brandon Belt has had surgery to repair another ailment.
Manager Bruce Bochy revealed on Wednesday that Belt had arthroscopic surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his right knee.
Belt was shut down by the Giants last week after experiencing lingering symptoms from a concussion he sustained the prior week.
"The timing is good," Bochy said of Belt's surgery. "After surgery, you just have to be quiet and lay down for two or three days. It was still going to be a little while before he could do some baseball activities."
As the media was informed of Belt's surgery, they were simultaneously informed of the injury that caused it, as no prior word had been given of his knee ailment.
"It was just a gradual thing," Bochy explained. "He had been getting treatment on it. I think you could look at a handful of those guys [in our clubhouse] who probably have a little tear."
Belt, who hit .280/.356/.478 with 18 home runs and 68 RBI in 137 games this season, is expected to recovery from the surgery in approximately four weeks.
"It was one of those nagging deals that he could play with. It was bothering him some," Bochy said. "It's that time of year. You heal up, get cleaned up with some surgery and get ready for spring."
