Giants are 'open-minded' about Madison Bumgarner competing in Home Run Derby
There still has been no announcement that there will be a Home Run Derby involving pitchers during the All-Star festivities, but the San Francisco Giants haven't ruled out Madison Bumgarner from competing in one.
"We said we'd be open-minded," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said, per the San Jose Mercury News.
According to the Mercury News, Bumgarner has met with Bochy, Giants CEO Larry Baer and GM Bobby Evans about possibly participating. The Giants are in wait-and-see mode since no such competition has been green-lighted by the league. The obvious concern is pitchers injuring themselves with violent and/or awkward swings.
Bumgarner, who has homered twice this season, is among the hurlers who have expressed an interest in the hitting competition. The Chicago Cubs' Jake Arrieta, St. Louis Cardinals' Adam Wainwright and Miami Marlins' Jose Fernandez also have lobbied to participate to showcase their offensive prowess.
Although much better known for his heroics on the mound, Bumgarner blasted five homers last season and four in 2014, and he has taken Los Angeles Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw deep twice in his career.
