Flashback: Fisk waves it fair in Game 6 of the 1975 World Series
It's one of the most iconic homers in major-league history and has been imitated on baseball fields, softball fields and backyard Wiffle Ball fields everywhere.
In a game that began on Oct. 21 (and ended in the wee hours of Oct. 22), Boston Red Sox catcher Carlton Fisk waved it fair.
In Game 6 of the 1975 World Series at Fenway Park, the Red Sox had blown an early 3-0 lead, then fought back from a 6-3 deficit to force extra innings in a must-win game.
Leading off in the bottom of the 12th inning, Fisk pulled the second pitch from Cincinnati Reds right-hander Pat Darcy down the left-field line toward the Green Monster. But would it stay fair? Fisk has been immortalized on slow-motion replays, hopping up and down and frantically waving his arms in an attempt to will the ball around the fair pole.
Well, it worked --€“ the ball bounced off the pole. Boston walked off with a 7-6 win to even the series at three games apiece.
The Red Sox lost Game 7 the following night despite carrying a 3-0 lead into the sixth inning. The Reds scored the go-ahead run in the top of the ninth inning for a 4-3 win, and Boston would have to wait another 29 years to break the Curse of the Bambino.
