Fans scramble for Reyes' dreadlocks

Baseball fans were trading for the hair of Miami Marlins star Jose Reyes on Saturday after the shortstop had his signature dreadlocks chopped off on national television.

The four-time All-Star was sat in the barber's chair on MLB Network's "Hot Stove" show Friday in order to comply with his new team's strict grooming policy.

The 28-year-old Dominican agreed a six-year, $106 million contract with the Marlins in December after eight years with the New York Mets.

Reyes admitted to some sadness at the departure of his dreads, but said he was happy to obey team orders, while raising some money for charity.

Heading into the chair, Reyes said, "It's going to be a little bit emotional, because I've spent three years with this hair."

But he added, "At the same time, I understand it's a rule of my new team, the Miami Marlins. I'm a team player, so I have to cut it off."

Asked how he felt afterward, the close-cropped Reyes said, "A little bit lighter. It's going to take me a couple of days to get used to it."

Bidding for the famous locks on eBay stood at more than $4,000 within 10 hours of the hair hitting the studio floor, with the proceeds set to head to the Make-A-Wish Foundation of South Florida. The online auction ends Wednesday.
