Dodgers' Adrian Gonzalez comments on boycotting Trump Hotel: 'I'm not ashamed'

Dodgers slugger Adrian Gonzalez made headlines on Monday, after it was revealed that he had boycotted staying in a Donald Trump-owned hotel with his team during a road trip to Chicago in May.

And while the story garnered plenty of reaction on the political front, Gonzalez said he didn't intend for it to become a big deal.

“I don’t want this to be a story,” the first baseman told the L.A. Times. “I did it for myself,” he explained.

He told the Times that his stances on political and social issues should remain a private matter, and the only reason his hotel request became public is because a team broadcaster shared the information with a newspaper reporter over the weekend.

“I wasn’t doing it for publicity, I wasn’t doing it for people to look at me or talk about me,” he said. “That’s not who I am. I just have my own values and morals that I want to live by.”

Gonzalez said he stands by his decision not to give Trump his business, but prefers to keep his political opinions to himself.

“I’m not ashamed by it,” he said when asked about the story getting out. “I’m OK with it." Gonzalez went on to say that he's "not a politician" and that he never intended to create a political debate.

As far as elaborating on his stance on Trump, he chose to stay mum.

“You can draw your own conclusions. They’re probably right.”
