D-backs' slugger Goldschmidt not interested in ASG home run derby

Some players think that participating in the All-Star Game home run derby affects your swing in the second half of the season. Others don’t believe that. Diamondbacks’ first baseman Paul Goldschmidt is of the former opinion. Per The Arizona Republic, Goldschmidt said:

"It definitely can," he said. "It depends on what type of hitter you are, how you hit batting practice … I'd have to think about it more. I definitely could see that happening.”

Going into Thursday’s game, Goldy is fifth in the National League in home runs with 15. He’s also second to the Dodgers’ Adrian Gonzalez in All-Star votes to start at first base. Just as in each of the previous two seasons, Goldschmidt said that he’s not really interested in participating in the derby.

Although his numbers say otherwise, the first baseman doesn’t think his swing is conducive to hitting homers. Per the Republic:

"I don't think I'd be that good at it," he said. "I know I've hit some homers in the games, but anyone who's watched me take batting practice knows I'm not just sitting there turning and burning trying to hit home runs.”
