Cubs to get bullpen relief with September call-up C.J. Edwards

The most notable arm that should make the Chicago Cubs' big-league roster when it expands on Sept. 1 is pitcher Carl Edwards Jr.

The Cubs are in need of bullpen reinforcement because of a starting rotation that has been weak at the back end, plus Jason Hammel's inability of late to make it out of the middle innings.

The hard-throwing right-hander boasts a 2.87 ERA in 34 minor-league appearances and a .139 opponents’ batting average. However, his control has been an issue with 41 walks in 53.1 innings.

That's the Cubs' biggest concern with Edwards, but it's not enough to keep him at Triple-A Iowa. Chicago needs arms and Edwards, who was placed on the seven-day disabled list this week but will be ready to go come Sept. 1, will is expected to get the opportunity to make his major-league debut and help the Cubs make the postseason for the first time since 2008.

"Even in short stints in the big leagues in spring training this year, he’s proven his stuff will play against these guys," Cubs vice president Jason McLeod told the Chicago Sun-Times. "It’s just the command.”
