Cubs give VP of player personnel 4-year extension

Cubs vice president of player personnel Oneri Fleita has been given a four-year contract extension.

The move was made this week and the club confirmed it Saturday.

The 44-year-old Fleita has been with Chicago in his current capacity as the head of the organization's player development system since 2008. He's been with the Cubs in various jobs since 1995.

The decision was a bit unusual because the Cubs don't have a permanent general manager after Jim Hendry was dismissed on Aug. 19 and replaced on an interim basis by Randy Bush.

Typically, new general managers are allowed to hire their own support staffs, but Cubs chairman Thomas S. Ricketts said he had a strong preference for the club to retain Fleita and scouting director Tim Wilken.
