Colorado Rockies: Trevor Story hits disabled list, nothing to fear

Trevor Story's slow start to 2017 came to a complete halt when a shoulder strain sent him to the 10-day disabled list. However, given the state of the Colorado Rockies, his absence will hardly impact the success of the team.

The disabled list continues to grow for the Colorado Rockies as Trevor Story joins David Dahl (ribs), Tony Wolters (concussion), Jon Gray (toe) and others on the sideline. According to Patrick Saunders, the Rockies placed Story on the 10-day DL after he injured his left shoulder while taking a swing in the second game of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Chicago Cubs.

Contrary to his impressive entry into the major leagues last season, Story is still searching for the swing he possessed in 2016. Before a thumb injury brought his rookie season to an end, Story smacked 27 home runs in 97 games while batting .272. He finished fourth behind Corey Seager for the Rookie of the Year award.

Yet, Story's batting average currently stands at .180 with only six home runs and 48 strikeouts in 33 games. Meanwhile his replacement – Pat Valaika – is batting .286 in 17 games with six runs and five RBI.

When asked about his injury, Trevor Story assured the media that his shoulder strain is not as serious as his thumb injury last season and hopes to make a speedy recovery.

And the Rockies sure are competing this season.

Amidst Story's struggles, the Rockies are maintaining a 2.5 game lead in the NL West with a 22-13 record. They are tenth in the major leagues in team batting average (.259) with the fifth most home runs (46) and fourth most runs (176).

So, to all you Colorado fans, be comforted that Story is not the centerpiece of Rockies' offense. In his absence, the Rockies will undoubtedly keep up their scoring ways and maybe some time off the field will help Story regain his power-hitting reputation.
